Kitchen of the Month: New Hope Remodel Designed for Aging in Place

When this New Hope couple came to us, they had a clear goal: create a home that would support their lifestyle now and into the future. Aging in place was a central theme in this remodel, and it touched every part of the project — from flooring to fixtures to function. This wasn't just a kitchen and powder room update - it was a thoughtful transformation of their downstairs space to make it safer, more beautiful, and convenient so they can focus on grandchildren and enjoying their house for the duration..
Designing with Purpose: Aging in Place

We started the project with a powder room and a vision. This couple wanted to expand the space and put a full bathroom in where none existed downstairs, allowing them to set up the ability to fully live in the bottom part of the house. We began by converting an existing wet bar connecting the kitchen and dining room into something much more practical — a full-sized shower. We made their downstairs bathroom fully accessible, with updates designed specifically for comfort, safety, and independence including handrails, on point mosic shower floor with plenty of grip, a towel warmer, and room to move.
Designing the Kitchen with Heart, Function and Room to Move
The kitchen itself was had been a dream of hers for quite some time. It was a blend of detailed customization and meaningful personal touches. From the beginning, the New Hope family had strong design preferences, and we worked all of them in! We collaborated closely to coordinate cabinetry colors, backsplash designs, and countertop selections reflecting their vision.
We removed a peninsula to open up the space and improve navigation, especially for
mobility in the future. Instead of losing storage, we added it in smarter ways:
Custom Shiloh cabinetry fitted precisely to their layout
Extended cabinets that filled once-empty wall space
And most notably, a large island that doubles as their dining table, with ample storage accessible from both sides for everyday needs and grandkid visits alike
That island is now the heart of the room — a gathering place, a workspace, and a memory-maker.
Kitchen Design Details That Matter

Some of the most special features in this kitchen speak to the uniqueness of the home and the people who live in it:
Elliptical mullion glass doors with interior glass shelving for a light, elegant touch
A built-in wine bar that elevated a nook into a beautiful, functional feature
A train (yes, an actual model train!) that was left intact and integrated into the final space — a nod to this family's hobbies and history
We also installed hardwood flooring throughout the downstairs for a seamless, accessible flow that’s both timeless and durable.
Keeping it Real
Let’s be honest — remodels don’t always go as smoothly as seen on television and we don't have the convenience of editing when delays are covered by a 3-minute commercial break. Even with the best laid plans, there were moments in this project when things got tricky. Timing shifts, supply shortages, layout changes and hiccups, and increased scope were all a part of this package, but we kept this family's home functional throughout, communicated every step of the way, and made sure that when the dust settled, everything was done right. With the results now speaking for themselves, this family is thrilled. And we’re proud — not just of the final look, but of the trust they placed in us to bring it all together.
