Our favorite "Comeback Kid" - Colored Cabinets

In our last few months of remodels, we've seen a growing trend actually taking hold: bold is back! Colored cabinets have surged in popularity, redefining the way we think about kitchen and bathroom design and going back to warmth and character, moving away from white. While white will always be a classic, neutrals are taking a necessary break, or at least a back seat. Homeowners are embracing bold and sophisticated hues to add flair to their spaces. Our recent projects showcase this exciting shift and show just how versatile and stunning colored cabinets can be.

A Nod to History: The Return of Colored Cabinets

Colored cabinets aren't just a modern trend, they're a rich design tradition! Historically, homeowners used bold colors in cabinetry to reflect the styles and sensibilities of their time. From status to style, colored homes have held various meanings throughout various historical eras. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the wealthy elite often used bold, rich colors in their homes to signify affluence. Bright pigments, particularly in cabinetry and woodwork, were expensive and difficult to produce, making them accessible only to the upper classes. Shades like deep greens, blues, and reds were signs of luxury, as these dyes were created from rare materials.

In the mid-20th century, vibrant colors like mint green, powder blue, and sunshine yellow were common, bringing a sense of cheer. Playful pastels and bold colors reflected the excitement and progress of the post-war era. Even through the 1970s, deep oranges, browns, and greens were popular choices, as they connected with nature-inspired interior design trends. These colors were not just fashionable, they were functional, brightening small spaces and giving homes a welcoming atmosphere.

Fast forward to the 21st century, neutral tones like white, beige, and gray took over as homeowners opted for minimalist, clean looks. However, the tide is turning once again, with modern homeowners looking to the past for inspiration. Today’s revival of colored cabinets taps into that historical love for rich, expressive hues, while blending it with contemporary design sensibilities. Whether it's moody blues, earthy greens, or warm taupes, these colors pay homage to the past while offering a fresh, modern twist on home design.

In this new era of design, we’ve seen firsthand how the right color can transform a room. Colors offer a way to make a statement and add personality without overwhelming the space

Examples of Our Recent Projects

Here are a few of the standout colored cabinet projects we’ve completed recently:

- Kitchen in Evergreen Fog: The soft, muted green adds a calming, nature-inspired feel to the kitchen. Paired with bright quartz countertops and modern hardware, it creates an elegant, and open space. The style leans into the traditional, but paired with the fabulous wood, the imported "cable knit" backsplash, and marble look flooring and the colored, custom look of the cabinets, it took on a completely unique look of its own.

Master Bathroom in Pewter Green with peach accents: This bold transformation made a huge impact by pairing Pewter Green cabinetry, giving the space a modern, luxurious edge. Neutrals played a role in the tile throughout the space, but bringing in gold tones with the heated towel bar and accessories, plus the peach toned linens and colorful rug added the splash of colors needed to lighten the space and further fashion the colorful feel.

- Aqua Cabinets: This fresh, vibrant color will bring a coastal, breezy feel to an upcoming kitchen, injecting energy into the space. With the tile, this bathroom was a radical transformation from its 90's wood and dark khaki feel. With the crisp white tile and accessories, the bathroom was completely transitioned!

In other news:

- Navy Blue - we created a truly unique "denim look" flooring using imported European tile with a navy vanity for a boys' bathroom. While there were accents in grey, it had a masculine feel, and a unique look - all due to the play with color.

- Repose Gray: A sophisticated light gray that works as a subtle color choice while still adding depth and interest to a kitchen. While yes, this is a neutral, it's being paired with beautful blues in the backsplash, niches and the walls to bring color to the space.

Neutral Cabinets: Still a Classic, but don't limit your thinking!

Despite the growing trend towards color, white cabinets remain a classic choice. And for those who ask me directly, "Is gray going out of style," my answer is still, "if you love gray, go with gray! The space is yours, not the internet's!" In fact, we recently completed a white kitchen and have another white kitchen and bathroom on the schedule. White still offers a timeless, clean look that many homeowners love, especially in minimalist or traditional design schemes. But with colored cabinets coming into play, we’re seeing homeowners balance classic elegance with contemporary flair.

Conclusion: Make Your Space Stand Out

Colored cabinets are breathing new life into kitchens and bathrooms, allowing homeowners to move beyond white and gray options. Whether you're drawn to bold, deep tones like navy and black, or prefer softer, nature-inspired hues like green and taupe, there's a color out there that will perfectly reflect your style and make your space stand out.

At Kitchen Me Now with our design partnership with Bucks Home & DIY, Inc,, we are excited to be at the forefront of this trend and to help homeowners create spaces that are as unique as they are beautiful. If you're thinking of remodeling, now might be the perfect time to embrace the colorful cabinet trend and make a statement in your kitchen or bathroom!
